Interpretive Walks

These Saturday morning walks are offered to all interested people at no charge. Children are welcome, but dogs are not appropriate. Wear sturdy footwear and bring water.

July 1. 10:00 to Noon. Camp Sherman Bridge to Allingham Bridge and back. Learn about the unique riparian habitat of the Metolius ecosystem, explore early Camp Sherman history, and observe changes to the river to enhance fish habitat. July 8. 8:30 to 10:30. Bird Walk along the Metolius. Join experienced birder Carol Wall to look and listen for the rich bird life on the Metolius. We’ll watch for woodpeckers, songbirds, dippers, and mergansers, exploring the ways they live in this riverside habitat. Meet at the Camp Sherman bridge fishviewing platform at 8:30 AM. July 15. 10:00 to noon. Plant I.D. Walk along the Metolius. Amateur botanist David Miller will share his knowledge and love of the many beautiful plants that live in this incredibly pristine and diverse habitat. Learn to identify some of the plants, trees, and shrubs that perhaps you’ve wondered about. Approximate distance is 2 miles. Meet near the Camp Sherman Bridge fish viewing platform at 10:00 AM. July 22. 8:30 to 10:30 AM. Bird Walk along the Metolius. Duplicate walk. See July 8 description

July 29. 10:00 to noon. Camp Sherman Bridge to Allingham Bridge and back. Observe the unique riparian habitat of the Metolius ecosystem that includes charismatic species such as osprey, river otters and merganser ducks. Learn about recent changes to enhance fish habitat and support native plants. Susan’s summer cabin on the river has been in the family since the 1930’s. August 5. 10:00 to Noon. Camp Sherman Bridge to Riverside Campground, return. Explore the upper river from the Camp Sherman Bridge to the site of the 1930’s Civilian Conservation Corps camp at the Riverside Camp Ground while learning about the natural and human history of the Camp Sherman area. August 12. 10:00 to 11:30. River Zen- Exploring Meditation in nature. Join retired USFS ecologist Maret Pajutee for an exploration of nature and calming the mind through outdoor meditation techniques including walking and guided meditation in the old growth forests along the tranquil Metolius River. Bring a beach towel or mat/cushion. Meet at Allingham Bridge (1 mile down river from store) Leader: Maret Pajutee. For Information call 541-549-3082

August 19. 10 am to 12 noon. Join Oregon Master Naturalist Gary “Gus” Gustafson for a two-mile walk along the Metolius River to learn about the great variety of fish and wildlife species that live in the area. Gus will identify species present and discuss their habitat, feeding and movement patterns. Discussion will help observers identify tracks, scat and other indicators, as well as fish restoration efforts. Meet near the Camp Sherman Bridge fishviewing platform at 10:00 AM. Leader:
