Black Butte Cupola Lookout Restoration Project: UPDATE

The restoration project kicked off 2 weeks ago and we have made amazing progress.  The weather has been mostly cooperative and that has helped.  Most importantly, we have had enormous support from the Forest Service and dozens of volunteers who have hiked up and down the butte, often on a daily basis and usually carrying a heavy load.  One day when we had dozens of boards to carry to the top, a group of Marines on a training mission showed up at the trailhead and carried all of the lumber to the top.  What luck!  We didn’t get their names or even any way to thank them, but if they ever see this, a HUGE thank you.

Depending on weather, we plan to have the cupola buttoned up for the fast approaching winter by the end of the month.

We’d like to extend a big thank you to a couple of our supporters: The Roundhouse Foundation (Sisters, Oregon) for the generous grant that kicked off the project, and Straw Propeller Gourmet Foods (Bend, Oregon) for the fantastic donation of yummy oatmeal that has kept our volunteers fueled up and smiling!

We will follow up with more updates but for now, here is a collection of photos of the project and some of the many who have worked so hard on this amazing historical structure.
